Homeowners Rushing to Install Batteries to Avoid Solar Fees

Homeowners across Australia are making a big shift, installing battery systems to avoid the recently introduced “sun tax”—a new fee that charges for excess solar energy sent back to the grid. This move comes as electricity companies, particularly in NSW, start charging homeowners for the power they contribute, instead of rewarding them .

‍

For example, Tony Sutton, a solicitor from Penrith, invested $30,000 in solar panels and batteries to store his energy, allowing him to avoid the new fee. By generating and storing his own energy, he’s set to save around $2,000 a year on electricity and an additional $1,300 by switching from gas to electric heating.

‍

As more homeowners look to future-proof themselves from rising energy costs and unexpected fees, battery installations are surging. VoltX Energy reports an 80% increase in inquiries and a 40% jump in battery sales, with more people recognising the long-term benefits of energy independence.
