SunCable’s project is backed by billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes, who took over after a split with former partner Andrew Forrest. With this project, SunCable aims to harness the Northern Territory’s abundant sunshine and supply up to 15% of Singapore’s energy needs. The company also plans to add wind generation and develop additional sites to supply up to 4 GW of electricity to Darwin.
NT Environment Minister Kate Worden hailed the project as a significant milestone for the Territory’s renewable energy future. “This project will deliver thousands of jobs for Territorians and harness one of our greatest assets — the abundance of sunshine,” she said.
The NTEPA’s assessment highlights that, despite the environmental risks associated with clearing over 12,000 hectares, the project can be managed in an environmentally acceptable manner. Key measures include protecting the threatened species and managing changes in surface water flows.
SunCable still has a few hurdles to clear, including negotiating Indigenous Land Use Agreements and securing final investment decisions, which aren’t expected until 2027. But with environmental approvals in hand, the project is well on its way to transforming the energy landscape.
