Like many of you, the aspiration to embrace a greener lifestyle sits at the core of my personal and family values. Striving to forge a better world for our children, I've taken steps like installing LED lighting and exploring solar options for our home. I've crunched numbers on batteries and electric vehicles (EVs) and still find myself cooking with gas. My ambition to contribute more to sustainability grows each day.
Yet, as mortgage rates climb and the cost of living soars, with energy prices spiralling seemingly beyond control, the financial pressures mount. My experiences working alongside so-called energy industry "experts", advisors, and consultants have left me disillusioned. The past six months have been a stark revelation: widespread uncertainty prevails, and too often, consumers are let down by their energy retailers.
In this climate of confusion, where industry insiders chase their tails, it begs the question: Who's looking out for the likes of you and me?
Fuelled by this frustration, my team and I embarked on a brainstorming odyssey. We delved into concepts like community retailers, microgrids, syndicates, and innovative community projects. We investigated optimisation software and tweaks to the grid. Each avenue, however promising, circled back to the same daunting barrier: substantial financial investment, without directly empowering individuals.
After months of relentless dialogue and exploration, an epiphany struck us. By simplifying access to accurate data, we could empower everyone with the means to meticulously plan, monitor, and conserve energy.
Thus, we transitioned from voicing our frustrations to taking decisive action. Our mission crystallised into the development of an application not just for us, but for everyone. In an era where apps streamline our banking, bill payments, health, and well-being, astonishingly, nothing existed to guide us towards our energy aspirations, sustainable living, or the dream of grid independence.
And so, Volta was born.
Our ethos is simple yet profound: before embarking on any journey, one must have a plan, a target, a goal. Volta is more than just an app; it's a commitment to sustainability, a guide towards energy independence, and a testament to the power of collective action for a brighter, greener future.
